Translator's annotation
The infertile aged or damaged pods that have no mature seeds are called tooth gleditsia (Ya Zao / 牙皂).
Seeds are called Zao Jia Zi / 皂荚子.
KWC2007.1.3996: "Gleditsia Japonica (Ri Ben Zao Jia / 日本皂荚) are thinner, twisted pods, 25-30cm long, with a dark yellowish brown surface...This contrasts with the standard herb, which has relatively straight pods, 15-20cm long." (Bensky, pg. 428)
